Erasures (2019)

Work created for the In Between? Image and Memory project ran by the European Network of Remembrance and Solidarity, focused on creating artistic reflections on the massacre of Piasnica, Poland.

This is a work about gaps and absences. The obliteration of a group and the disappearance of thousands of bodies is obvious but the story we were passed down about it is also riddled with gaps. The perpetrators tried hard to cover their traces, the information about the events is insufficient, most of the bodies vanished. What’s more, the telling of history itself implies gaps, as taking a certain position hides other possible stories. The overwhelming white of the pictures conveys this feeling of lacking, of all of the absences, while the two central images melt the past and the present together. Dark leaves from the Piasnica forest merge with the shape of the 1955 memorial, creating a new object. Bodies of victims from an archival photograph become abstract, like a trace of the past that has lost all brutality."

Think Twice Collective (2018 - 2019)
